About this deal

Spencer Williams: There’s certainly a relatability and authenticity to these different characters, and sometimes you could see similarities in our world, both bad and good, to Panem. Now I would love to talk about the uniforms that the audience will see in this film. I fell in love with The Academy uniforms. That red color was striking. The uniforms were sophisticated but still scholarly with a Panem flair. I also can appreciate the neutrality of them. If this is what school uniforms would have looked like when I was in school, I would have been all about them. Illustration by Gloria Kim – Courtesy of Lionsgate Very! I think that's because Francis loves to shoot things in a real, organic way and not have to add on lots of special effects. When it came to our combat soldiers for D13, we wanted them to be really functional so we worked with the UK designer Aitor Throup. We wanted them to be lean and practical and we had a fantastic collaboration with him.' Spencer Williams: Likewise! I’m so excited to be here with you and to talk about the costumes for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. It’s such an exciting film. I LOVED it.

Well, when you do these costumes, each one is your children, and they all present their own problems and issues. Perhaps the biggest problem — even bigger than dealing with visual effects — was the weather where we were shooting [in North Carolina]. It was 90, more like 100 degrees, and 100 percent humidity. From handcrafted designs to pieces by Alexander McQueen, Nicholas K, Tex Saverio and Juun J, the new Hunger Games film is an eye-popping fashion fantasy. The Hollywood Blog caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville to talk about the fashions she chose for Katniss, Peeta, and the competitors in the arena—plus, how she handled author Suzanne Collins’s frequent impulse to have characters appear nearly naked.

Spencer Williams: Is there any red fabric left in the world? * laughs* Now, let’s talk about the dress that everyone’s been talking about. Lucy Gray Baird, played by Rachel Zegler, wears this beautiful rainbow dress, which I gather holds a lot of significance to fans. I imagine there was quite a lot of pressure with this specific look, knowing it’s going to be featured so prominently. Tell me how this was created; I thought it was stunning. Illustration by Gloria Kim – Courtesy of Lionsgate Covered in sparkly gold sequins and spectacular moon headpieces, the male and female tributes sported far-out costumes for the 74th Hunger Games. They were "flying to the moon." It also represented that it takes time to travel, and that some people used to use the moon for directions. The silver mesh material was very shiny, and might have been meant to represent metal electronics. [1] Spencer Williams: You and your team really got to set a whole different tone. As you said, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place many years before the story many of us became familiar with. The Capitol is still very sophisticated and beautiful, but there is an eeriness to it. To me, it felt as though we were watching a beautiful period piece set in the world of Panem. How did you approach The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes costumes to meet the time period? Well, one of the great liberties that we did have is, in the world of Panem, in the Capitol, fashion is constantly changing. So we didn’t really have to stay literally tied to a lot of things. After the first film, we got to change with trends and fashion, like in the real world, but at a different pace in the Capitol.

For the 74th Hunger Games, the male and female tributes lived up to the name of their district with long light-blue outfits and luminous pearls which represent pearls in the sea, and had starfish on the shoulders. Their headpieces were made of the same materials as the victor's crown/headband. [1] District 3 - Technology [ ]
